The new technology that I'm going to talk about is EnChroma, which is a company that produces glasses that allow people suffering from color blindness, see color. You heard that right. Since one in every twelve men and one in every two hundred women suffer from color blindness, the EnChroma team wanted to be able to invent a technology that allowed people to see color. There are different types of color blindness, some people can see different shades of the same colors, others can only see black and white. Since there is a variance of color blindness, on the EnChroma website you can take a test to see where you lie on the scale of color blindness. The test allows your glasses to be the perfect fit for you to be able to see color.
I first heard about EnChroma from my mom who was thinking of buying the glasses for my dad, who suffers from color blindness. My dad is extremely prideful, so he never lets it show how much it bothers him that he can't see color. It is most obvious when he goes shopping for clothes, dresses himself, and whenever he is driving and there is a flashing light at an intersection. This is one of the scarier moments for him because he doesn't know if the flashing light is yellow or red, which have very different meanings. My mom wants my dad to be safe, but also wants him to be able to see the world in color. We take advantage of the ability to see how blue the sky is on a hot summer day, or the beautiful reds and oranges of the leaves changing color in the fall because we have never NOT been able to see it. That is why the EnChroma glasses are so unique and fun, they allow people to see for the very first time.
How the EnChroma color enhancing glasses will change technology is through the use of images and social media usage. I believe that with the ability for people who suffer from color blindness to see color, they will be more and more active on social media. Specifically with the use of Instagram. Since they are able to see color, they want to be able to capture the image and then post about it. People who may not have been able to see the full beauty of something, with the color and liveliness of the world around them, will want to be able to show the world what they see.
