New Technologies

Image
The new technology that I'm going to talk about is EnChroma, which is a company that produces glasses that allow people suffering from color blindness, see color. You heard that right. Since one in every twelve men and one in every two hundred women suffer from color blindness, the EnChroma team wanted to be able to invent a technology that allowed people to see color. There are different types of color blindness, some people can see different shades of the same colors, others can only see black and white. Since there is a variance of color blindness, on the EnChroma website you can take a test to see where you lie on the scale of color blindness. The test allows your glasses to be the perfect fit for you to be able to see color. I first heard about EnChroma from my mom who was thinking of buying the glasses for my dad, who suffers from color blindness. My dad is extremely prideful, so he never lets it show how much it bothers him that he can't see color. It is most obvious wh...

Case Reflection 12: United Breaks Guitar

Image
http://fortune.com/2017/04/10/united-airlines-customer-service/ https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-intersect/wp/2017/04/11/the-full-timeline-of-how-social-media-turned-united-into-the-biggest-story-in-the-country/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.5ede0317d5ce United Airlines has been having ongoing issues with their customer service habits. With the use of social media, the incidents have been traveling faster to where more and more people are hearing about it. I didn't hear about the guitars being broken until I read this article, but I did hear about the passenger being forced off the plane. There are so many other actions to take other than physically removing someone from an aircraft. It was United's fault because they should understand how easily it is to take out your cell phone and video the situation. There are so many more controversial situations that have more light shed on them because of social media and technology. Since United hasn't been having the best...

Case Reflection 11: Ok Go

https://www.theverge.com/2014/6/30/5856480/ok-go-videography https://www.fastcompany.com/1578965/ok-go-ditches-label-over-youtube-embedding-rights I understand Ok Go's decision to not want to release their new music video on Youtube. With the massive increase in videos being viewed, shared, and posted on Facebook, it makes sense that Ok Go would want to release their new music video to the social media site. The rock band wanted their hard work and music to be spread at a very fast rate, and Facebook was the way to go. The mistake was the airlines posting the music video to Youtube without asking for permission before. This is what lead to a controversial situation between Ok Go, Youtube, Facebook, and the S7 Airline. The S7 Airline was somewhat greedy and selfish in the fact that they wanted to promote and advertise their own company in order to make some sort of profit. The company decided to post the video, breaking the legal contract, before Ok Go even posted it. Because of ...

Case Reflection 10: Miracle Mattress Twin Tower Sale

Image
http://time.com/4484790/mattress-company-911-commercial/ https://www.yelp.com/biz/miracle-mattress-san-antonio I'm from San Antonio, Texas, and I never heard about the mattress company or the sale scandal. When watching the commercial, my mouth was wide open in shock the entire time. I can't believe that a company would try to market and benefit off of something so terrible that happened to our country. There are so many things that are wrong with this concept and commercial, that I couldn't even imagine why the company made this decision. The bottom line is that it is terrible what Miracle Mattress did. I think that Miracle Mattress was trying to increase their sales and profits, and with the constant need to market and advertise, they chose 9/11. There are so many other random holidays that companies choose to have sales that don't make sense, Labor Day, Memorial Day, and many other ones. I always see commercials for these holidays, but they are completely differ...

Case Reflection 9: Ponderize

Image
This week's case study about Devin Durrant was a story that I had never heard of before. Prior to reading the case and researching more information about what happened, I had no idea what General Conference was, let alone the word Ponderize. From the links and description of what General Conference is and what it represents to the widely popular LDS Church. Devin Durrant did a fine job with his testimony about pondering and memorizing different verses in the bible. I thought that his testimony topic alone was very inspiring and positive to listen to. Where, in my opinion, the Durrant's went wrong was the fact that they had created several different websites promoting their "brand". The fact that Devin, who knows about entrepreneurship and how to create a financial profit, was using a platform where he knew he would be heard and listened to promote himself is terrible. Different people and different articles had varying opinions on the situation. In my opinion, the D...

Case Reflection 8: Pastor's 10% to God

Image
The situation that happened between the Applebee's chain restaurant and the customer is something that prior to social media would have been there and gone within the day. What I mean is that there would be some talk amongst the other employees, but it would have blown over by the next day. Since social media and the digital age is everywhere and all around us, we can't escape it. Whenever something interesting, scary, or funny happens, the first thing anyone thinks of now is to pull out his or her phone. People instantly want to share whatever has happened or they witnessed on social media. People love the likes and attention they receive because of the news the are distributing. What Welch did when seeing the receipt left by the Pastor was something that I bet anyone would have done. This doesn't make what she did okay, especially if it violates Applebee's policy. An article that I found while doing some additional research on the case talked about the digital lite...

Case Reflection 7: Anthony Weiner

The story of Anthony Weiner was one that I hadn't heard of, which is surprising, but nonetheless one of the more common stories in the news. With the growth and popularity of social media it is extremely common to have these types of stories become so popular. Since public officials and people in higher positions are active on social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook, it is common for them to be over sharing. Anyone, even members of Congress, can get caught up in the storm that is social media. People love the attention that comes with social media, and even though Anthony Weiner was already receiving attention because of the fact that he was a member of Congress, he still wanted more. Another issue that is very prevalent in the news because of social media is fact checking. Once something is posted on the internet, it is there for everyone to see. That's what ending so many careers. The fact that in the pst, before social media, people could simply lie without having a...
