Online Reputation Assignment: Chad Artist

When we were introduced to the online reputation assignment, I was shocked. It was weird to me that we had to essentially stalk a person for a grade. At first when I started to research about Chad, it felt fine, but it wasn’t until I couldn’t see some of his social media sites because they were private that I felt I had reached an all time stalker status. I had to go through his girlfriend’s social media accounts so I could find out more information about him, and then I found myself invested in finding out more information about them as a couple. It was just this spiral of digging for more and more information, and by the end of it I felt kind of icky. I felt like I had invaded someone’s else’s life, which I guess I did, just without them knowing. Anyway here are the trends and patterns I found about Chad Artist based off my stalker findings. Chad Artist is a junior at Utah State University . He is originally from California, but moved to Logan, Utah at some point. Chad went to ...

Case Reflection 6: Basketball Cop

Image
When I first saw the title of the case reflection for this week, I was expecting it to be a negative story about cops. It’s interesting that the first thought that came in my head in regards to the police and social media is negative. This shows what is most common and popular in the media in regards to the two subjects. I was pleasantly surprised when I read that the situation was an extremely positive one. The story of the basketball cop made me so happy because it was a situation that could have been a very negative and disastrous one. Instead, Officer White chose to take the given situation as an opportunity to show something positive. With the rise in social media and technology, there has been documentation of police brutality. There have also been extremely negative outcomes of police and minority children. Social media has been both a positive and a negative thing when it comes to police officers. An article I read talked about how police officers are able to solve more cri...

Case Reflection 5: PayPal Post

Image
The situation that PayPal the company got themselves into is one of the most common issues with the increase popularity of social media. PayPal wanted to be able to promote something positive about their company on social media, so the people in charge of the social media account managed the comments on the post. In my opinion I think that this is where PayPal went wrong. They shouldn’t have just been deleting all of the negative comments for no reason. This shows that customers or the public can’t express their opinions about the post or the company as they please, which is the whole purpose of posting on social media. PayPal should have set up a comment policy that set the expectations of comments the public is able to post. If commenters broke any of the policies then the company can delete said comments. This way the company isn’t just keeping whatever comments positively reflects them. While I was doing additional research on companies responses to social media comments, I came...

Nestle Case Reflection

Image
The Nestle case was definitely a very fun one to read about. The Nestle company set up an additional line to their customer service line. This was a very smart decision for the food company because it gave their customers a fun surprise when calling. What I thought was particularly smart of Nestle was that with the addition of their customer service line, the word spread extremely fast. Customers who discovered the joke line, then told their friends and family, who then told their friends and family. The Nestle customer service line went viral. We discussed in class is the concept of rating. Many people know and are familiar with Nestle and their products, but because of the “funny” line this broadened their fanbase. With a broader fanbase, the company was able to get higher ratings. More and more people were hearing about the Nestle company. Even if some people weren’t a fan of Nestle products, everyone is a fan of jokes. The company was being flooded with calls, for the best reaso...

Social Media Case Reflection 3: Tom Petty

Image
The case of Tom Petty’s virtual death and actual death is something that I had no prior information about. I knew that Tom Petty had died because I was on my laptop, and receive CNN updates randomly. After reading the articles that explained what really happened, I was shocked. This case perfectly sums up our society and the urgency news networks and sites are to put information out there. Not only is there an urgency to put the information out there for the public to read, they have to be the first people to do so. That is how the word spread so fast about Petty’s “Death”. Trustworthy news organizations were releasing statements confirming the death of Tom Petty. Information was being thrown out on social media just to get the news’s name out there.  By TMZ, and many other credible news organizations, having to correct their statements hindered their credibility. I don’t normally trust TMZ, but sources like CBS and The Rolling Stone are both in my opinion credible sources to ...
