Social Media Case Reflection 3: Tom Petty

The case of Tom Petty’s virtual death and actual death is something that I had no prior information about. I knew that Tom Petty had died because I was on my laptop, and receive CNN updates randomly. After reading the articles that explained what really happened, I was shocked. This case perfectly sums up our society and the urgency news networks and sites are to put information out there. Not only is there an urgency to put the information out there for the public to read, they have to be the first people to do so. That is how the word spread so fast about Petty’s “Death”. Trustworthy news organizations were releasing statements confirming the death of Tom Petty. Information was being thrown out on social media just to get the news’s name out there.
By TMZ, and many other credible news organizations, having to correct their statements hindered their credibility. I don’t normally trust TMZ, but sources like CBS and The Rolling Stone are both in my opinion credible sources to get information from. Credibility is extremely important to me when it comes to receiving news information. Seeing that The Rolling Stone will put out information without even checking their sources, I would definitely rethink how trustworthy they are.
Some additional information I found on this subject was about the way we receive our news information now. It was interesting to see that today’s teens are mostly getting their news information from the social media site, Snapchat. Since the update of magazines and popular sites have their own Snapchat story that is updated everyday, that is an easy way for teens to see what is going on in the world. What teens, along with anyone who receives news from social media sites, need to look out for are shadow banning. There was a link that was shared with us that talked about the dangers of shadow banning, which basically limits the voice of one side of an argument. There are clear baisis out there with news sources, but it is our job to be well informed and do our own additional research.
With the case of Tom Petty, I completely understand why his family was so upset. It was basically going viral that one of their family members had passed, but in reality he was still alive. AnnaKim Petty is a credible source to get information from because the situation is dealing with the life and death of her father. She was there and would be the first to know if anything with his health had changed. The greediness of news sources to be the first to get information out to the public is what our society has come to. No one wants to read from a network that is last to report on an important issue.
