Case Reflection 6: Basketball Cop

When I first saw the title of the case reflection for this week, I was expecting it to be a negative story about cops. It’s interesting that the first thought that came in my head in regards to the police and social media is negative. This shows what is most common and popular in the media in regards to the two subjects. I was pleasantly surprised when I read that the situation was an extremely positive one. The story of the basketball cop made me so happy because it was a situation that could have been a very negative and disastrous one. Instead, Officer White chose to take the given situation as an opportunity to show something positive.
With the rise in social media and technology, there has been documentation of police brutality. There have also been extremely negative outcomes of police and minority children. Social media has been both a positive and a negative thing when it comes to police officers. An article I read talked about how police officers are able to solve more crimes because of social media and technology, but what is also happening is that more officers are having social media being used against them for crimes they commit on the job. When there are positives, there are also negatives with social media.
What Officer White did to help break the cycle of cops and youths interacting was amazing. The fact that the video of the officer playing basketball with the kids went viral is great because it was something positive that was being spread around. It wasn’t long before it reached the basketball community, which then touches on the influence of celebrities to the cause. Once Shaq became involved the videos exploded on the internet. There was a hashtag that was created that increased the popularity on social media, and then there was a gofundme account that was made. Because of one officer's choice to turn a potentially negative interaction into a virally positive one, there was a positive change of heart throughout a community. That is what is amazing about social media and technology. There is always a chance to change and share something positive, it is up to us as a society to choose what we want to spread.
